Mullingar Tidy Towns

Mullingar, Westmeath

Pocket Forests is organising this mission.

This project is funded by The Woodland Support Fund. The fund was set up by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to help increase forest cover in Ireland sustainably by building support for forestry among communities and landowners.

Pocket Forests help to highlight the environmental and wellbeing benefits of native woodlands. The Pocket Forests model brings communities together to create small pockets of native Irish trees and shrubs in the areas where most people live, work, learn and play. People can get to know the trees and shrubs that make up native woodlands by seeing them popping up in towns, cities, schools, universities, beside playing pitches and healthcare settings. The two-stage project begins with an emphasis on the importance of healthy soil life and the huge role played by regenerated soil in the health of the forest ecosystem. Soil preparation is carried out by communities months before the trees are planted.

Plantings: Pocket Forests supplies each project with a tree pack containing detailed planting instructions for the 11 native trees and shrubs, along with sustainably-sourced Irish native wildflower seed to be sown around the planting area.
